How long does a septic system last?
A properly installed and maintained septic system can last 20–40 years, depending on soil conditions, system design, and regular maintenance. Septic tanks should typically be pumped every 3–5 years to help extend the life of the system.
If your system has an alternating valve for multiple drain fields, it is recommended to switch the valve once a year to allow each drain field time to rest and properly absorb wastewater.
If you notice slow drains, sewage odors, or standing water near the drain field, your system may need inspection, repair, or replacement.
